It is evident that in a poker game, a bad beat is an immense piece of bad luck and can hit a player, all set to win but losing out in the end, very badly. Many professional players are known not to take bad beats calmly and react to the unexpected loss strongly. However, there are veteran poker players who take bad beats on their stride and acknowledge the reversal only as an exception and not as a blow to their tactical play which works most of the time. In online poker games, players who suffer bad beats are more ungracious to accept the loss than in offline games and accusation of rigging of the random number generator is heard. This has led to online casinos offering online poker games to publish data to prove the genuine randomness of the number generator.

Some poker games offer a consolation prize for the player facing bad beat and reward his strong hand which eventually got beaten. This dough is the bad beat jackpot and is not common in all poker games. Anyone wanting to cash in bad beat jackpot must apply to the rules that state how strong the losing hand of the player must be to be applicable for the dough. A case in point is a game of Texas hold ‘em that may set the rule that if both the winning and losing hand played all their hole cards and the bad beat had a hand of four of a kind or better, then he qualifies for the bad beat jackpot. While rules, percentage of payout and amount of jackpot varies from one casino house to another, usually a rake, separate from the standard rake, is collected from the pot to constitute the bad beat jackpot which is shared among all players at the table during a bad beat with the losing hand receiving the biggest portion.

There are many terms in poker that have originated from playing conditions. One such term associated with poker game is bad beat. It has no specific definition but is used to mean that a player who had a hand of strong cards eventually ended up losing the hand. This situation comes into play when a player has evidently a strong hand and he understandably bets strong but his opponent, although makes a poor call, ultimately wins. There is no agreed way of telling what makes a dead beat and often players who have lost in spite of a strong hand refuses to accept that their hand was a case of bad beat.

There can be two situations that yield a bad beat even as it is logical to assume that although a player may initially hold a strong hand, other players can better it by improving their hands as more cards are dealt. One is a mathematical fallacy where the player had won because his opponent had a bad beat and should have actually lost the hand after calling a bet with not a decent hand and having pot odds against him. Again, when an originally weak hand receives ideal cards while drawing and wins the pot despite being the underdog, it is a case of bad beat for the player with originally strong hand. An example may be when in a game of Texas hold ‘em, a player is dealt extraordinarily good cards in the turn and river rounds that enables him to make a winning hand and topple the favorite. Another case of bad beat is when a player holds a very strong hand and yet fail to emerge as the winner because his opponent had an even superior hand. This kind of bad beat was portrayed in the James Bond movie Casino Royale, where the protagonist wins the game with a straight flush which overturned the opponent’s strong full house hand.

In some poker games, particularly in those games where blind bet is a part, if a new player wishes to join an ongoing game he has to pay an amount called the post bet. Since, a post bet is considered a live bet, this amount can be called or raised when the player who paid it has his turn to act. Generally the amount of a post bet is equal to the big blind or in some cases, its value is the same as the minimum bet.

Sometimes players miss their turn to pay their blind wager when they go away temporarily and they are required to pay a post bet in the pot to be allowed to take part in the game again. If this is the case, then the size of the post bet is either equal to the small or big blind and in some cases it is equal to a combination of small and big blind that is going the rounds at the time the player wishes to enter the game. It is rule that when a player has to pay both big and small blind as his post bet, then the amount of big blind is live and can be called or raised but the small blind amount is dead and cannot be considered for any action. In those casino houses, where only one blind, with the largest value first, can be paid by each player in any given hand, there the pot bet I always invariably a live bet.

Since a player can be exempted from paying post wager if he is paying the big blind, sometimes new players book a seat in the gaming table and don’t take part in the game till it is their turn to pay the big blind. In case it is a player returning to play after temporary absence, he sometimes opt to miss some hands of play to let the big blind paying turn come to him rather than pay a post wager and enter the game straight away.

While ante and blind wagers are the main types of forced bets that are common in poker games, there are some other forced bets too such as bring-in. this kind of bet takes place after the cards are received by all the players but before any other part of the game begins. Generally, bring-in means that bet that a player is forced to wager after being chosen to do so by calculating the value of his face up cards after the opening dealing. The bet size is not much and once he has put in the bring-in his opponents carry on with the game in the stipulated policy of acting by turn. The arbitrariness of this kind of bet means that this is used in those games which have an ante wager, rather than the blind bet games.

In stud poker games, the player whose face up cards add up to the lowest value is the one who has to pay the bring-in. This situation is not followed in low hand stud poker games where the person with the highest value of face up cards must pay the bring-in.

In almost all fixed limit and in some spread limit poker games, the size of the bring-in is always lower than the minimum bet. In case the player who has to pay the bring-in pay only the stipulated amount, the function of this forced bet becomes the same as a small blind; however, he may also opt to pay a normal bet amount. The players who are seated after the one who has paid the bring-in can either call it, although the amount of bring-in is lower than normal bet size, or they may choose to raise it to minimum bet value, in which case it is said that the bet has been completed. If in a poker game, bring-in and fixed bet have equal value, the game usually gives the player who paid-bring-in the option to raise right away or in the first betting round, provided his opponents have not raised but only called.

Big bet poker often lets players to “kill the pot” by putting up the sum equal to current to-go amount. You are normally permitted to kill for more than the to-go amount in no-limit games, however for no more than 1/2 of their stack. A number of games let overkills wherein someone else can also kill the pot despite someone have further killed it. Someone else might have chance to kill it yet again to further raise the sum to-go to double the new kill amount. A limit is put to the number of kills permitted on a hand, despite the game is being called “no-limit”.

In Hold’em or other flop games, to kill the pot, the kill got to make it known prior to dealing any cards. Limit lowball games let a player to kill the pot from any position wherein the killer creates a blind of the current limit which is doubled for that hand. The player kills the pot in no-limit games works last. Moreover, a few of the limit games get played by way of a kill or a half kill. If some condition in these games met, then the stakes is automatically get raised.

The same stakes get doubled in the case of a kill game, or getting up by 50% in the case of a half kill. Further to the usual blinds posted for the game, the player (met the kill condition) can post a blind identical to the new small bet size. In a high only game, the condition is typically that someone wins two pots in a row. A high-low split game comes up with the situation where someone takes the complete pot of the minimum size. It’s all about the pot in a fascinating game of poker to make more fun with it.
